Passwords protect all devices and files – This simple step can prevent hackers from gaining access information. Make sure you use complex passwords that mix letters, numbers and symbols. Change default passwords from vendors to strong ones as soon as you can. Make sure you are using the most up-to-date antivirus software and frequently conduct a thorough security scan of your computer and its servers.
Don’t send confidential or personal sensitive information via email. This includes Social Security numbers, bank account information, passwords, etc. Email isn’t safe, and it can be intercepted.
Be sure that your network and data are safe – Ensure your laptops, computers, and portable storage devices are protected by employing strong encryption when transmitting information to third parties, and to safeguard the information stored on these devices. It is also important to develop a plan to react to a cyber-attack which includes who you’ll inform and what you will do (e.g. employees customers, credit bureaus, and employees).
Make sure that you have a copy of all of your data. The offline copies should be kept in an entirely separate location from where your primary copies are kept. This can stop attackers from getting access to your primary copies, or from deleting them.
